Roads of Crete is driven by a passion for exploration and a commitment to providing unforgettable experiences for riders of all skill levels.
Crete is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean sea. It extends 260 kms from east to west and from 12 to 60 from north to south. The population of the island is around 650.000. Crete has a very interesting morphology with plenty of peninsulas and gulfs as well as mountains, gorges and valleys. Also has a great history starting from the 7th millennium BC. The Minoan civilization was the first
civilization in Europe. Excavations have revealed the connection between Crete and the ancient Greek world, the Egyptians, the early Christians, and many others. Through the ages Crete successively was occupied by the Romans, the Byzantines, The Venetians, the Ottomans before it became an autonomous state at the end of the 19th century and later part of Greece. All of those periods have left plenty of monuments worth visiting.
Our guided tours start from Heraklion, capital of Crete. The weather in Crete from May to September is mild Mediterranean. During this period Crete gets from 0.5 to 10 mm of rain per month in the coastal areas (practically this is a dry summer) while temperature varies from 17 to 33 Celsius. Crete does not have crime phenomena. Walk around fearlessly everywhere 24 hours a day. Cretan hospitality is famous all over the world. Nowadays it is preserved in its more original form in small villages on the mainland. Still you will sense the tourist friendly behavior of the locals when you ask for directions or when you participate in local fiestas.
The roads on the island are not of the quality of the roads of central Europe. In some routes they are slippery, sometimes with negative inclination and narrow. That calls for extra attention when you ride. The so-called North National Road extends from east coast to west coast and mostly is a one lane per direction road. We hardly recommend the use of NNR, especially when there are plenty of low traffic roads that can take you anywhere. There are no animals that are dangerous to humans on the island of Crete in contrast to other parts of Greece.
Gas stations operate from 6.00 until 22.00 with very small variations in gas price. There are plenty of ATMs on the island but all businesses operate with POS. Traffic laws in Greece are quite strict. Try to keep up or will end with high fines and perhaps suspension of your drivers’ license. No tolerance for consuming alcohol and riding.
The island is filled with archaeological sites. From ancient times to Venetian and Ottoman eras there are fortifications, monasteries, castles, and many other remarkable things to visit. Be sure you have the info when you get there.
Many wonderful beaches surround the island. There is always baywatch service at the organized ones, along with beach bars, restaurants and other facilities. If you are in favor of the isolated ones, carry your water and food along and be prepared to do some dirt riding to get there or perhaps some walking.
Do not hesitate to ask us any question that comes to mind.
